From Fear to Love: Ciana’s Path to Happiness
Ciana is a sable/tan and white Shetland Sheepdog who will turn 5 this year. She was born in May 2020, during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, and became part of our family in early 2023. After losing our beloved 13-year-old Sheltie in July 2022, we spent months searching for another dog without success. Finally, when we met Ciana for the first time in January 2023, we instantly knew she was the one. As seniors in our 70s, we felt that adopting an adult dog was the best fit for our lifestyle. Following visits to ensure we were a good match, Ciana officially joined our family in February 2023.
Transitioning from her previous home on a small farm to our house on a busy highway was an
adjustment for Ciana, but she adapted well. She loves spending time in her fenced backyard and enjoys
watching the world go by from her big front window. We take her everywhere we can, including on
evening walks through stores, to help her acclimate to new environments.
However, there were challenges early on, especially with traveling. On trips to visit family, she wouldn’t
drink, eat, or even relieve herself until we returned home. She was clearly scared of
everything—especially strangers. We also experienced a few heart-stopping incidents when she
managed to slip out of her leash and harness, once heading toward the woods behind our house and,
another time, dangerously close to the busy highway. Both times, we were fortunate to get her back
safely. After that, we purchased a no-escape harness, which has made a significant difference in
ensuring her safety.
Ciana doesn’t play with toys but finds comfort in her lick mats, which help with her anxiety, and she
enjoys chewing on her no-hide bones. She loves being outdoors in the backyard whenever possible. Our
trips to visit family are improving as she becomes more comfortable, and she’s learning new tricks like
sitting, shaking a paw, and lying down for the many friends she’s making in stores who stop to pet her.
Despite her progress, Ciana is still very fearful of people, especially visitors entering through our front
door. To ensure her safety, we use a different entrance when guests come over, and we keep her on her
harness and leash to prevent any escapes.
A kind and patient groomer, as well as a supportive veterinarian, have been instrumental in helping
Ciana adjust to her new life. While her fear of people remains a challenge, we are committed to making
her feel more comfortable and secure in every situation.
We are so thankful for this beautiful girl who has come into our lives. Helping her overcome her fear has
been a journey, but it’s one filled with love and hope. The Covid-19 pandemic didn’t just impact
humans—it also shaped the lives and experiences of countless pets like Ciana.
