This precious 5-year-old Golden Retriever is the most gentle, sweet, and kind creature on the planet. Meet Calla, both beautiful inside and out.

In the summer of 2020, I had a vision to find a Golden Retriever to accompany me with my work. There were three litters of pups I had been looking at, and when I discovered Calla’s litter was born on my birthday, I called immediately. Calla was one of five pups, and she was the only female that hadn’t been chosen. Lucky me! She waited for me, and this has become the most special union.

Calla was seven weeks old when she became part of my life.

Calla works with me as a therapy dog. As a PSW, I learned how therapeutic dogs can be to folks and the elderly, especially those with dementia. I discovered how I could integrate pet therapy into my work and provide care in the most special and unique way.

Since her training, Calla instinctively began to interact with many. In a group setting, she takes turns sitting with each resident and gives comfort and love. Most of her interactions couldn’t be taught. Her intuition to soothe and bring joy is heartwarming. She encourages folks to get out of bed, go outside for a walk, or simply enjoy a comforting snuggle.

Calla visits residents when they are admitted to hospital and brings comfort when they are in an unfamiliar setting. Incredibly, folks who are non-verbal speak full sentences when Calla is present. Family members benefit from hearing their loved ones speak.

Calla also works in a wellness clinic that provides mental health support and counselling. She is part of group work with children, as well as individual sessions. It’s quite special when these children request her to be part of their session with their counsellor.

Calla isn’t all work and no play. She loves to go to the park and play fetch with her favourite Chuckit! ball. She also loves to swim and is the first one in the lake when we are in cottage country. My life has been blessed to have Calla in it. She is my earth angel. Calla gives as much love as she gets—truly and completely.
