Have you ever wondered why your dog won’t stop barking or why your cat suddenly starts hiding? Changes in pet behaviour can be frustrating and confusing for pet parents. Animal communication offers another way to understand what your pet may be experiencing emotionally, physically, and mentally. By learning to recognize the messages behind your pet’s behaviour, you can strengthen your bond and better support their overall well-being.
Behaviour is Communication
Through their behaviour, our pets are always giving us clues about how they are feeling.
When we observe their body language, energy, and vocalizations, we can begin to understand that these are all ways our pets express their needs, emotions, and physical experiences.
If they’re doing something you dislike or don’t understand, do you wonder what is causing the behaviour and how to shift it toward a more desirable one?
Animals rarely act out to be difficult or annoying. A dog that constantly barks or a cat that spends more time hiding is communicating with us. These types of behaviours often stem from physical or emotional issues such as:
- Boredom
- Hunger
- A need for mental and physical stimulation
- Feeling unsafe, scared, or threatened
- Physical discomfort or pain
Common Signs Your Pet Is Trying to Communicate Something
- Excessive barking or meowing
- Hiding or withdrawal
- Changes in appetite
- Destructive behaviour
- Aggression or reactivity
- Changes in sleep patterns
- Avoiding touch

Real-Life Examples
Fear and Anxiety
When our pets feel unsafe or unsettled, this often shows up as destructive behaviour, hiding, or aggression. Understanding their emotional triggers allows us to create an environment where they feel safe and secure.
One reactive dog was often considered difficult or aggressive. Through communication, it became clear that the dog’s behaviours were rooted in uncertainty, fear, and feeling unsafe. A communication session identified these underlying emotions as well as the triggers contributing to them. Understanding what was behind the dog’s behaviour helped the pet parents take steps to make their dog feel safer, more secure, and more confident. As a result, they saw a noticeable reduction in reactivity and an increase in their dog’s overall contentment.
Pain and Discomfort
When it comes to pain, animals often hide their discomfort as a survival instinct, making it difficult to recognize. Behavioural changes can be one of the earliest signs that something is physically wrong. Changes in posture, vocalizations, breathing, activity levels, appetite, or a reluctance to be touched can sometimes indicate physical discomfort.
One senior cat with arthritis began urinating outside the litter box. The cat was thought to be stubborn or acting out. However, the behaviour was actually the result of increased discomfort when accessing the litter box. Once this was understood, the pet parents modified the litter box to make it easier for the cat to enter and exit. This simple adjustment allowed the cat to resume using the litter box.
Both of these examples highlight how, when we learn to understand our pets’ behaviours, we can better support their physical and emotional well-being. This benefits both pets and their people.
The Human-Animal Connection
As pet parents, we may notice that our animals are sensitive to our emotional state. When we feel anxious, stressed, or overwhelmed, our pets may pick up on these feelings and become restless or unsettled themselves.
A good place to start is by calming ourselves and supporting our own emotional balance. A calm pet parent can often have a positive impact on their pet.
Some supports that may help both you and your pet include:
- Flower essences, such as Rescue Remedy, which may help promote a calm and centred emotional state during stressful situations like veterinary visits or thunderstorms
- Therapeutic touch techniques that encourage relaxation and support the nervous system
- Grounding exercises that can help both of you feel calmer
- Positive visualization to help reinforce desired behaviours
- Behavioural counselling for additional guidance and support when challenges persist

How Can Animal Communication Help?
Every behaviour has a reason behind it. Whether your pet is barking, hiding, acting fearful or displaying unusual habits these behaviours may be clues about their physical comfort, emotional state, and unmet needs. When we recognize our pets’ behaviours as a form of communication and as a reflection of their overall well being, rather than a problem to be fixed, we can gain a deeper understanding of them.
Animal communication can provide another layer of insight into factors that may be contributing to your animal’s behaviour. Working with an animal communicator may help:
- Uncover root causes that are not apparent through observation alone
- Reduce frustration for pet parents
- Foster a deeper connection between pets and their people
- Enable pet parents to support their animals with greater compassion and understanding
When combined with careful observation and appropriate veterinary care, Animal Communication can be a valuable resource for understanding your pet’s behaviours and supporting their happiness and well-being.
