We had been thinking about buying an automatic, self-cleaning litter box for quite some time. Eventually, we decided to go through the research process ourselves—so you don’t have to.
We have two cats, Svetlana and Siyamak, also known as the paws behind LocalPaws Magazine. Following the general rule of number of cats + one, we had three extra-large litter boxes in our home. As you can imagine, that required a lot of space—not only for the boxes themselves, but also for the litter-trapping mats in front of them. Cats need enough room to comfortably do their business, cover their waste, and turn around easily.
Each month, we were going through three medium bags of plant-based clumping litter to keep all the boxes filled. The litter boxes were basic plastic ones from a local pet store. We scooped two to three times a day and deep-cleaned the boxes with soap and warm water once a month.
One ongoing challenge was our younger cat, Lana, who didn’t always cover her waste. When we were home, we’d notice the smell right away and scoop immediately—but this highlighted how dependent the system was on constant monitoring.
The idea of switching to a self-cleaning litter box had been on our minds for a while. We attend 15–20 pet events annually, and at many of these trade shows we came across several brands offering automatic litter boxes. Combine that with countless online options, and choosing the right one quickly became overwhelming.
So we narrowed things down by identifying the key factors that mattered most to us.
Safety
Safety was our top priority. Automatic litter boxes use different self-cleaning mechanisms. Some rotate an internal chamber to sift litter and drop waste into a tray, while others use a metal mesh or rake system to separate clumps.
The most important feature? Reliable sensors that detect when a cat is inside the unit, preventing the cleaning cycle from activating. While most brands claim to have these sensors, not all perform consistently—and that raised an important question for us: Who do you trust?
Space
Many automatic litter boxes are surprisingly small on the inside, making them better suited for kittens or smaller cats. While cats enjoy enclosed spaces for resting or playing, they generally prefer a more open, spacious area for using the litter box. Tight interiors and narrow entrances can feel claustrophobic, especially for larger cats.
We wanted to make sure our cats would feel comfortable and confident using their new bathroom—not hesitant or stressed.
Litter Type Used
We transitioned away from clay litter years ago and have been using plant-based, sustainable clumping litter ever since. Finding a unit compatible with our current litter—or other plant-based options—was essential.
Litter boxes that required crystal or silica litter were an immediate no for us, due to the potential health risks if ingested. Features
From basic models to high-tech options, automatic litter boxes now offer everything from weight detection and mobile apps to cameras and detailed usage alerts. While these features are impressive, having the most advanced technology wasn’t our deciding factor.
What mattered more was trusting that the core self-cleaning mechanism worked reliably—and that the unit would last for years. Keeping things simple helped us avoid getting lost in marketing noise and feature overload.
Reviews, Reputation, and Other Factors
We also looked closely at other people’s experiences. This included website reviews, Google reviews (when available), social media comments, and third-party communities. Since online reviews can be biased or artificially generated, we didn’t rely on them alone.
Ultimately, company reputation and longevity played a major role. We didn’t want to invest in a product from a brand-new company that might not be around in a year or two. That led us to search for the pioneer in the automatic litter box space.
Brad Baxter, an engineer and founder of Whisker, developed the original Litter-Robot in the 1990s. Inspired by managing his own cats’ litter box, he created a rotating, gravity-based system that automated the cleaning process. Our Experience So Far
Litter-Robot4 checked every box on our list, so we ordered the white unit along with the grey litter trap mat and the additional staircase. We’ve been testing it since December 2025, and it has consistently met our expectations.
The unit arrived securely packaged and was light enough for one person to set up and move. The setup process was simple, thanks to clear printed instructions and digital guides.
