Do Our Pets Have Personalities?

There are some people who believe that animals cannot possibly have personalities. However, pets who live among us certainly do, developed over centuries of living closely with humans and in society. And just like with people, understanding their personalities can help us accommodate their needs and allow them to thrive. In an animal communication reading, the communicator can help identify your pet’s personality and needs. This can go a long way toward improving your pet’s quality of life and making your life together incredibly fulfilling and meaningful.

In animal communication sessions, most communicators start by asking the pets to describe themselves. The communicator may receive adjectives, images, and even physical sensations. Pieced together, this creates a clear picture of the pet’s personality (both inside and outside of the home) with questions such as:
• “What do you like to do at home?”
• “What is your favourite place or activity at home?”
• “Where is your favourite place outside, and what do you like to do there?”

This insight can help with behavioural issues, family dynamics, and even dietary and health concerns. Some pets describe themselves with adjectives like “funny,” “a gentleman,” “wise,” or “carefree.” Their people usually recognize these descriptions immediately, though sometimes follow-up questions are needed for clarification.

Other pets reply with images. In one reading with a dog, I saw an image of him walking very daintily on the tips of his toes in the grass—which his person confirmed was how he liked to walk every day in a particular area of the backyard. A cat once showed me an image of himself walking on a very narrow ledge and said, “Confident and at ease.” His person confirmed that he indeed loved balancing on narrow surfaces around their apartment with total confidence.

Some pets even share physical sensations that reflect their feelings, such as anxiety or nervousness. I might feel it in my abdomen, chest, or throat, then describe it to their person—who often confirms that their pet is indeed anxious, timid, tense, or stressed at home, outside, or both.

By simply asking pets to describe themselves, we learn so much about their personalities and set the tone for a confident and clear connection in the reading. With this information, we can address any issues they may be experiencing. For example, if a pet describes themselves as sensitive or high-strung, reducing loud noises or activity in the home can be an easy and practical way to create a calm, safe environment.

Understanding personality also helps with family dynamics—such as deciding which new pets might be compatible—or how to structure routines. If your cat is confident and at ease, she may handle changes like rearranging furniture or renovation noise well. But if your pet is anxious and sensitive, these changes may disrupt their sense of safety, potentially leading to behaviours such as inappropriate urination, aggression toward other pets, or reactivity toward family members or visitors.

Just like us, pets’ personalities determine how they handle daily life. Unlike us, however, they don’t usually “grin and bear it.” They express their stress in practical, instinctive ways that we often misinterpret as “bad behaviour.” By looking back at when a behaviour began—like a cat urinating outside the litter box or a dog suddenly becoming reactive—we can often pinpoint a triggering event or environmental change. Once identified, we can remove the stressor or take steps to help our pets cope.

Of course, ruling out medical concerns with a veterinarian is essential. But animal communication gives pets the chance to be heard. Sometimes, behaviour shifts almost immediately after a reading simply because their message has been understood.

When emotional issues are at play, we can use tools such as:
• Home remedies and therapeutic touch to calm the nervous system
• Gentle training techniques to reset behaviour patterns
• Flower essences to address specific emotional imbalances
• Homeopathy to balance a pet’s core constitution and personality

For example, flower essences correspond to specific emotions. Once we identify a pet’s personality and emotional needs, we can use the right essences to help restore balance. Similarly, homeopathy addresses a pet’s foundational state, supporting their overall wellbeing just as a healthy immune system maintains physical balance.

Today, there are many modalities to address our pets’ physical, emotional, and behavioural concerns. Identifying their needs through an animal communication session is a powerful first step. Learning your pet’s personality is not just fascinating or heartwarming—it is key to giving them the happiest, healthiest life possible. Whether your pet is shy or confident, bold or cautious, playful or serious, connecting with them based on their unique personality—not on general assumptions—builds a bond of true joy, understanding, and love.
