Sharon and her senior Shih Tzu, Ben, are well-known in their St. Catharines community. She shares insights with Judy DeCosta about Ben’s noble background and the secret to his luxurious coat.

What inspired you to choose a Shih Tzu as your pet?
I wanted a toy breed puppy and was drawn to Shih Tzus, also known as “Lion Dogs.” They have a fascinating history tied to Tibetan royalty—owned by emperors and never sold or traded. They don’t shed, have long lifespans, and their adorable, kissable faces are irresistible! Shih Tzus are affectionate, loving, and loyal. From the moment I brought Ben home, he felt like he had always been part of my life.
Can you describe Ben’s personality?
Ben has an amazing, almost human-like temperament. He’s fantastic with children and gets excited when he sees a baby stroller during walks. He’s gentle and draws people to him wherever we go. Even at 13 years old, he’s very active and loves playing with his toys. He’s also incredibly intuitive and seems to understand my feelings. Ben is independent and loves his routines, which brings a soothing rhythm to my busy work-from-home days.
What are some of Ben’s unique habits?
I taught Ben to “pray” before his daily spoonful of yogurt. He bows his head until I say, “Amen,” and then he’s ready to dig in! He also loves fruits and veggies, especially his daily carrot snack. Ben tilts his head whenever I tell him I love him, which melts my heart. People often comment on his regal, confident air during our walks—I think it comes from knowing how loved he is. At bedtime, Ben surrounds himself with his stuffed toys, including a purple octopus he’s had since he was a puppy.
How do you take care of Ben’s coat and grooming needs?
Ben has been visiting the same professional groomer every month since I got him, and it keeps his coat glossy and tangle-free. Grooming is essential for Shih Tzus and can be done at home with the right tools, but I prefer to spoil him.
I clean his face daily with a soft washcloth to prevent tear stains—a common issue with this breed’s flat face and protruding eyes. Weekly ear checks, regular vet visits, and dental cleanings every two years keep him healthy. Ben’s diet includes a mix of wet and dry food with joint support and Omega-3 supplements to maintain his overall health.
What activities does Ben enjoy most?
Ben is happy as long as he’s included in whatever I’m doing. Whether it’s lounging, crafting, or going for a walk, he loves being part of my day. He enjoys his daily neighborhood walks, where everyone stops to greet him. Even at his age, he entertains himself with toys and loves traveling—he’s been all over North America! During hot weather, we limit outdoor time since Shih Tzus are sensitive to heat.
Do you have any tips for someone considering a Shih Tzu?
Shih Tzus thrive on love and companionship, making them perfect for anyone wanting an affectionate and attentive pet. They require regular grooming and a diet with essential fatty acids for their gorgeous coats. These dogs are excellent companions and small enough to travel easily. If you’re considering a Shih Tzu, I say, “You won’t regret it—I Shih-Tzu not!”
